Allied Health Degrees

There are two types of allied health professionals; they are either technicians or therapists. The main difference is that technicians are trained in under two years and often report to therapists or technologists. Technician careers include: ophthalmic laboratory technician, radiological technician, cardiovascular technician and clinical laboratory technician.

Allied Health Degree Overview

Graduating with an allied health degree offers students a variety of clinical healthcare professions. Allied health professions are clinical health care professions that are different from dentistry, nursing and medicine. Allied health programs teach students to work in health care teams to make the health care system function by providing a range of diagnostic, technical, and therapeutic remedies. Students also prepare to direct patient care and support services that are critical to the other health professionals they work with and the patients they serve. Allied health professionals find themselves working as an integral part of a healthcare team to help make procedures run effectively and efficiently.

What to Expect with an Allied Health Degree

Allied healthcare jobs include cardiovascular technologists and technicians, dental hygienists, diagnostic medical sonographers, opticians, and radiologic technologists and technicians. Students can choose from a variety of fields in therapy like physical therapy, physical therapist assistant, occupational therapy, occupational therapist assistant, or speech language pathology or various imaging, respiratory, or laboratory jobs.
